How I first met the Bedouin hotelier.Right by the sea, in the middle of the colourful hippie town of Dahab, tourists, dropouts and locals live next door to each other. Arriving at the Marine Garden Camp, you are out of the hustle and bustle.

A perfect haven of peace with a delicious vegan restaurant – probably the first in Egypt – its own coffee house and a cosy Arisha, the Bedouin lounge with palm roof. The beach with a wonderfully intact reef is directly in front of the door. The rooms are simple and clean. In the camp there are also seven cats and the dog «Action», which is contrary to his name mostly lazy lying on the beach. A good motto to which we have adapted a little bit day by day. If we were hit on the road on the first day with: „Where do you come from, why are you in such a hurry?“, towards the end we were ourselves looking amused at the speedy new arrivals from the west. That’s how fast it goes.

At home with friends
Host Mohamed Soliman wants everyone to feel at home in the Marine Garden. Because hospitality is an old Bedouin tradition. Bedouins love to share. At his camp Mohamed shares nature, friendship, peace and good food with his guests. After Mohamed visited us in Switzerland exactly one year ago, we were welcomed like a family member by him and all his friends and acquaintances.
Whether in the middle of the desert, in a garden or at home with a Bedouin family: Everywhere we were fed with tea and food, everywhere we felt so welcome and the atmosphere was always so warm.
Simply indescribable, as it is so normal for them to give. And we first have to learn to accept again. The Bedouins have their own legislation, which fortunately is also recognized by the Egyptian government. One law, for example, is that all fruits in the desert belong to everyone and everyone may eat them for his or her own needs until he or she is full. I like the simple, original way of the Bedouins. For me it has something familiar and at the same time very philosophical.
The environment, nature and interaction with each other are also important to Mohamed. His principle:
Be good to every being. When it is dark, someone will give you light. If you are alone, someone will come to you. We should all help each other.
It is clear to him that nature needs help. Sea Shepard is stationed here and organizes weekly clean-ups with the local kids. Guests who collect a basket full of garbage on the beach get a free cup of tea. And in the vegan restaurant there is water in glass decanters instead of plastic and the delicious Fishy Burger is made of sea grass, because the local fish stock from the well-protected Red Sea is unfortunately still declining. But there are further efforts and other restaurants that deliberately do not serve fish. And although it’s so delicious, we also followed OceanCare’s once-a-month recommendation and only once gulped of it, but then enjoyed it all the more. Just for the sake of our own fish called Azza. She finally found her name here in the desert. Azza is my travel companion storyteller and instagramer (see Highlights) and tells us in her gripping way what she finds and what she likes and worries about. That fits much better than when I’m always babbling, she makes it much more charming and credible. Meanwhile I can also lie on my lazy skin, together with Action…
Leave nothing but footprints. Take nothing but pictures. Kill nothing but time.
Here are a few house rules, which also make sense outside the Marine Garden:
- Do not touch or take anything out of the sea but rubbish.
- Do not leave cigarette butts on the beach, it poisons the sea and is disgusting for the next ones who want to sit there.
- Do not litter, and feel free to join the regular clean-up activities.
- We separate plastic and cans from other rubbish. Do it the same way.
- Please help saving energy and water. Turn fan and air conditioning off when leaving the room, and don’t shower longer than necessary.

Den Beduinen-Hotelier.Das Marine Garden Camp liegt direkt am Meer, mitten in der kunterbunt-quirligen Hippie-Stadt Dahab, wo Touristen, Aussteiger und Einheimische Tür an Tür zusammenleben. Doch der Marine Garden liegt ausserhalb jeglicher Hektik.
Ein perfekter Ruhepol mit einem köstlichen veganen Restaurant – dem wohl ersten in Ägypten – einem eigenen Kaffeehaus und einer gemütlichen Arisha, der Beduinenlounge mit Palmendach. Der Strand mit einem wunderbar intakten Riff liegt direkt vor der Haustür. Die Zimmer sind einfach und sauber. Im Camp sind ausserdem sieben Büsi und der Hund Action zu Hause, der entgegen seinem Namen meist auf der faulen Haut liegt. Ein gutes Motto, dem wir uns Tag für Tag etwas angepasst haben. Wurden wir am ersten Tag noch auf den Gassen angehauen mit: «Woher kommt ihr, warum habt ihr es so eilig?», haben wir gegen Schluss die eilenden Neuankömmlinge aus dem Westen selber belustigt angeguckt. So schnell geht das.
Zuhause bei Freunden
Gastgeber Mohamed Soliman möchte, dass sich im Marine Garden jeder zu Hause fühlt. Denn Gastfreundschaft ist eine alte beduinische Tradition. Beduinen lieben es, zu teilen. Hier teilt Mohamed mit seinen Gäste Natur, Freundschaft, friedliches Beisammensein und gutes Essen. Nachdem Mohamed vor genau einem Jahr bei uns in der Schweiz zu Besuch war, wurden wir von ihm und von all seinen Freunden und Bekannten wie ein Familienmitglied empfangen.
Ob mitten in der Wüste, in einem fremden Gärten oder zuhause bei einer Beduinischen Familie: Überall wurden wir mit Tee und Essen verköstigt, überall fühlten wir uns sowas von willkommen und die Stimmung war immer unglaublich herzlich.
Einfach unbeschreiblich, wie es für sie so normal ist, zu geben. Und wir erst wieder lernen müssen, anzunehmen. Die Beduinen haben eine eigene Gesetzgebung, die zum Glück auch von der ägyptischen Regierung anerkannt wird. Ein Gesetz lautet zum Beispiel, dass sämtliche Früchte in der Wüste allen gehören und jede/-r für seinen eigenen Bedarf davon essen darf bis sie oder er satt ist. Ich mag, die einfache, ursprüngliche Art der Beduinen. Sie hat für mich etwas altvertrautes und gleichzeitig sehr philosophisches.
Mohamed Soliman, HotelierSei gut zu jedem Wesen. Wenn es dunkel ist, wird dir jemand Licht geben. Wenn du allein bist, wird jemand zu dir kommen. Wir sollten alle einander helfen.
Die Umwelt, die Natur und der Umgang miteinander sind auch Mohamed wichtig. Dass die Natur Hilfe braucht, ist für ihn klar. Nicht grundlos ist Sea Shepard hier stationiert und organisiert mit den lokalen Kids wöchentliche Clean-ups. Gäste, die einen Korb voll Abfall am Strand einsammeln, kriegen gratis eine Tasse Tee. Im veganen Restaurant gibts Wasser in Glaskaraffen statt in Plastik und der köstliche Fishy Burger ist aus Seegras, denn der lokale Fischbestand aus dem wohlweisslich geschützten roten Meer ist leider weiterhin am Zurückgehen.
Es gibt jedoch weitere Bestrebungen und andere Restaurants, die bewusst keinen Fisch servieren. Und obwohl er sowas von köstlich ist, haben auch wir uns an die Einmal-pro-Monat-Empfehlung von OceanCare gehalten und nur einmal davon geschlemmt, dies dann dafür umso mehr genossen. Nur schon unserem eigenen Fischli Azza zuliebe. Sie hat schliesslich hier in der Wüste zu ihrem Namen gefunden. Azza ist meine mitreis(s)ende Storytellerin und Instagramerin (siehe Highlights) und erzählt ganz packend, was sie so antrifft und was sie freut und was ihr Sorgen macht. Das passt viel besser, als wenn ich dauernd schwafle, sie macht das viel charmanter und glaubwürdiger. Und ich kann derweil auch mal auf der faulen Haut liegen, zusammen mit dem Action…
Hier ein paar Hausregeln, die auch ausserhalb des Marine Garden voll sinnvoll sind:
- Fass nichts an und nimm nichts mit aus dem Meer, ausser Müll.
- Lass keine Zigarettenstummel am Strand zurück, sie vergiftet das Meer und sind sowas von ekelhaft für die nächsten, die dort sitzen wollen.
- Halte den Strand und die Umwelt sauber und nimm an unseren regelmässigen Clean-up-Aktivitäten teil.
- Wir trennen Plastik und Dosen von anderen Abfällen. Mach es genauso.
- Bitte hilf mit, Energie und Wasser zu sparen. Schalte den Ventilator und die Klimaanlage aus, wenn du den Raum verlässt und dusche nicht länger als nötig.
